STEVIE starring Lejaune Andre

For more information please visit A TRIBUTE TO STEVIE

This duo has been a dream of mine for sometime, it started in 2016 with great success with the duo’s first concert at St. Lawrence Chapel in Ashburton, Devon. Both myself and Gary studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and are highly experienced musicians in their own right. We will be kicking off 2017 with concerts at Calstock Arts and Dartmouth Music Festival where we will premiering a new and exciting work for Tenor Saxophone and piano ‘Illumina’ by Marianna Filippi. Please visit the diary for more details.

Neil Burns – Guitar
Matthew Tredget-Johns – keys

Album review by British jazz trumpeter Steve Waterman

For this CD Jade has brought together a group of musicians whose ensemble playing shows great energy, drive and swing but are also capable of producing delicacy and thoughtfulness when needed. They are also all strong soloists in their own right. I have worked with these musicians a number of times and am a huge admirer of their musicianship. It is great to hear them brought together for this wonderful CD.

The music, a collection of Jade’s favourite pieces from the standard jazz repertoire, offers a range of styles, tempos and moods. These are perfect settings to show each musicians improvisational abilities, highlighting how well they communicate and interact.

The opening title, Water Jug by Frank Wess sets the mood for the album with the rhythm section providing a dynamic swing propelled by the solid, driving bass playing of Kevin Sanders and the exciting drumming of Coach York. The combination of the fluent Neil Burns on guitar and melodic Matthew Tredget–Johns on piano provide a beautiful array of harmonic textures.

Following this, is a mix of the well known standards, Beautiful Love, given a light bossa nova treatment, an inspired version of I Can’t Get Started, played as a jazz waltz and the beautiful ballad, Everything Happens to Me, giving the band an opportunity to display their lighter, thoughtful side.

Also included is a selection of some classic compositions written by jazz musicians, from the opening Water Jug to McCoy Tyner’s Contemplation, Stolen Moments by Oliver Nelson, Hank Mobley’s This I Dig Of You, Midnight Voyage by Joey Calderazzo and Clifford Brown’s blues, Sandu.

Jade has a big, strong tenor sound with a beautiful sense of melody and swing that is ideally suited to the music presented here. She is also able to produce light, delicate playing when required, as in her beautiful solo on Everything Happens To Me.

A wonderful debut CD. Jade Gall is a musician to look out for and I’m sure we will be hearing much more from her and her band in the future.
